As you can imagine, we receive thousands of requests for products and sponsorships throughout the year from many worthy organizations. Where some testing is required by law or currently unavoidable, we aim to minimize the number of animals used.

Because we recognize the importance of preserving natural resources, Sunsilk and Unilever are engaged in a series of programs designed to address a number of issues concerning the environment. These issues range from biodegradability to recycling. Our company actively participates in industry-wide coalitions and trade associations which are working toward solutions to solid waste problems. We have established a center devoted entirely to the development and testing of new packaging materials and concepts. Company efforts to reduce solid waste include recycling projects, packages which can be recycled and use of recycled materials. Our scientists are also conducting studies on a broad range of product formulas and ingredients to ensure their environmental compatibility

The bottles are made using HDPE, which is a recyclable material. According to the American Plastics Council, over 63% of the population has access to recycling programs which include #2 plastics, such as the kind used in our bottles.

We do not specifically test our products for the presence of gluten, a sticky protein found in some grains such as wheat, oats, rye and barley. Gluten may be present in products that contain derivatives of wheat, oat, rye, and barley. In labeling our products, our company follows the guidelines established by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which primarily uses the International Nomenclature for Cosmetics Ingredients (INCI). Therefore, if we use an ingredient derived from a grain such as wheat, oat, rye, and/or barley, those names will appear on the label.
